Hanging tea cans and storing them to save space

To make room on the work surface, the tea tins should fit under the shelf hanging directly above them (Fig. IMG_4428). Instead of a more complex storage solution, a friend came up with the idea of using magnets. Voilà.

Using two neodymium pot magnet (16×5 mm) with a recess, a tea tin weighing up to 600 g can be hung up in a „floating“ manner. Only two magnets are needed. This should prevent scratches on the tins, but also create a certain amount of acoustic insulation when attaching them. Alternatively, you could use a single, larger and stronger magnet. A larger surface area would also make attaching them easier. You could just as well do without the felt altogether, in which case – as I said – even a pot magnet measuring 16×5 mm would be sufficient.

The shelf is made of wood. Please pre-drill thin holes. The bottom of the shelf should not split.
The felt should completely cover the magnets. This should be screwed between the shelf and the magnet. This will ensure that it stays in place over time. The screws must not pull the felt onto the thread when attaching it, so it’s best to cut it very lightly in the appropriate places. To do this, you can wrap the felt around the magnet once and mark the „holes“ with a pencil, where you can make a tiny cut with scissors. The magnets can then be prepared with the screw and felt. Then all that’s left is to screw them under the shelf (hold the screws with the magnet in place beforehand to check that they are the right length)
And now we have a practical way of hanging our tea cans.
