Noble chess game with magnets

Presentation
You may have seen a classy, magnetic chessboard here and there.
However, during extensive research I never came across a chessboard with a magnet under each individual square.

Magnetic chessboard

The magnets not only provide an almost magical gaming experience when the figures are automatically drawn to the middle of each square, but also prove to be very useful when you can hang the intermediate score of a game or even a special final position on a wall.

Production
The implementation of the idea brought with it some challenges.
My requirements were to build a chessboard that was nice to look at and that people would enjoy playing on.
The magnetic effect is of no use if the chessboard does not look nice.

Chessboard

It was therefore clear from the start that the chessboard should not be visible as it contains magnets.
I attached the magnets by drilling a hole from the bottom to 2 mm on the surface in order to glue the magnets in.
There was a risk that I would accidentally drill through and thus undo all the previous effort. That is why test drilling and a good height stop were essential.

Inserting the magnets
It is not difficult, but it is very important not to confuse the north-south polarity of the magnets.

Inserting the magnets

The magnets were sufficiently fixed with hot glue after being inserted.

Base plate
For an elegant look, I decided to use a base plate (maple).
The frame that was made is glued to the base plate, which firmly fixes the game board.
The force-fit connection allows the board to be opened without causing any damage for any adjustments.

Figures
The figures that I did not make myself each received a rodmagnet (opposite pole).
