Today we would like to show you how our customer attaches a solar panel magnetically to the roof of his vehicle.
His goal was to attach a solar module to a car roof without the roof being drilled or glued.
Solution: Magnetically attach the solar panel to the roof
What to watch out for:
- The Neodymium pot magnet Ø 42.0 x 9.0 mm with cylinder bore holds 32 kg and must be attached to the solar panel in a flexible manner so that it can adapt to unevenness or curves on the car roof.
It only holds optimally when it is full. - First, the bottom of the magnet should be covered with thin insulating tape so that the paint is not scratched.
- It should be noted that the magnetic force on a thin car sheet is significantly lower than as described in the magnetic data sheet.
If the holding force is not sufficient, there are 2 options:
– First option: glue a sheet of steel to the underside of the sheet metal roof
– Second option: use more magnets
I decided to use more magnets, it is more expensive but easier to implement.
- During assembly: place a thick cloth under the magnets until the solar panel is correctly aligned.
- When dismantling: place a flat wooden board on the roof and pull off the solar panel with a lever.
Solar panel easily installed
The solar panel was magnetically attached to the roof in no time at all. This type of mounting is suitable for solar panels on vans, mobile homes and trucks.
